PC Music's Very Own: Namasenda Has Unlimited Ammo
NAMASENDA - UNLIMITED AMMO
SCORE: 80/100 - 8PC Music's Namasenda created a stunning debut in 2021 with this project, and it manages to truly be a work of wonder in every way imaginable. It shares similarities to her peer Charli XCX's 2017 album 'Pop 2', and A. G. Cook further proves his prominence and uniqueness as a producer throughout the entirety of this project.
Namasenda is without a doubt one of the best vocalists that the genre has to offer, and the clanging, clashing, and bass-heavy sound of this album is tipsy, multilingual, and truly a stunning encapsulation of the hyperpop and bubblegum bass genres respectively. It feels like much more than your average hyperpop project, and it goes to show that PC Music does it better than any other collective - they're much more than just a label, and artists like A. G. Cook, SOPHIE, and GFOTY have proven this time and time again, with Namasenda being another subordinate that might not be under their grasp for much longer with how much true star talent this record projects.
I have been meaning to get to this album for a long while now, and it truly was a treat to get to this after hearing so much refreshing maturity on 'Pop 2', with this feeling like a continuation of sorts. It's mature, bouncy, clean, and futuristic - and it uses its formatting to its advantage to take changes, risks, and to ultimately make for a stunning project that showcases the true talent and potential that Namasenda has - she truly has opportunities to shine so bright, and I hope that she gets proper treatment and comes back with more work; especially in the massive electronic/pop boom we have been getting in more recent times once more. Now would be absolute prime time for her to make another similar project while simultaneously adapting to what has changed and become even more enjoyable within the last four years, and she could continue on a path into more electronic-rooted music, even more than she already has.
This project takes shots and doesn't miss even once - and Namasenda truly does have unlimited musical ammo. The overall sound of this tape is highly consistent and enjoyable throughout, something rare for a mixtape; but hyperpop seems like it was made for this kind of format where experimentation, shifts, and changes in sound & style are truly welcomed every time they come up. It's introspective and witty like Charli XCX's more shifted works while being something unique and more driven in vocal work, and the usage of effects, autotune, and various producorial choices make this one of the most strikingly underlooked and underappreciated projects in the entire genre.
Not sure I've ever heard of her, I'll have to check it out! 🩷
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately she isn't very big but I hope that she gets some more recognition! This is her only project at the moment and I'm not sure where she went after this. But it's a really fun one and it's a shorter album too which is always super nice to have!
