Dance Music Gone Lo-Fi: Good Evening
NITE JEWEL: GOOD EVENING
SCORE: 78/100 - 7.8
'Good Evening' feels more like an experiment than a true debut - and it doesn't quite show off the sparkling colours that Nite Jewel should be rightfully known for.
The production here is nice, moody, and atmospheric - with various touches that feel somehow both haunting and serene while blending dream pop and chillwave, this album feels like a wild trip into the most cooky forest you'll ever encounter. There are gorgeous synth lines paired with unintelligible vocal work; and the production style of this album is comparable to Tyler, The Creator's early work; with the bright, moody synths and their atmospheres as well as the drum beats being used to back them up.
'Good Evening' was recorded while Gonzalez was still attending college as a student, and it captures her influences taken from old-school disco music put into a more modernly accessible format. It keeps the steady, winding grooves of the 70's disco scene while adding something more lush and influenced by the decade it came from within each pulsating beat and change in tone. It remains consistent while changing enough to create a seamless listening experience; and it captures a sense of brilliance from an artist who was so young at the time.
This album is so exceptionally unique it's hard to ignore - and once you warm up to it? You're sure to be hooked on every glistening minute. It feels "out there" while still being palatable and heavily enjoyable for any occasion. It's dreamy with just enough flair and just enough wonky fairytale-esque atmospheres to really stick, and it's a truly captivating piece that is formatted gorgeously.
It's dance music gone lo-fi, and the sound of 'Good Evening' really does capture a portrait of a sunny evening, one where it isn't too hot, the weather is acting as it should - and the beats let you unwind and finally feel whole again. It's a fulfilling album despite being slightly lacking in memorability or replay value, and it manages to feel like an absolute essential front-to-back listen despite itself.
Sounds like a lovely album!💃
ReplyDeleteIt's infinitely replayable for lounging or doing work/day-to-day life! I really warmed up to it and would honestly bump up my rating a few points with how it's grown on me.
