One-time Greatness: Jack Ü
Jack Ü: Skrillex and Diplo present Jack Ü
SCORE: 86/100 - 8.6
Jack Ü was a short-lived project that brought together two of the biggest EDM producers of their time, and the combination of Diplo and Skrillex's unique, yet colliding styles makes for an album full of incredibly fun and catchy songs with spectacular production.
It has the expected sounds for EDM for this particular time period, but there is something much more exciting about this album than most - with plenty of heavy-hitters, hits, and deeply memorable tracks, the album works in unison to deliver a 35 minute party that is well worth it for any EDM fans. Songs like 'Where Are Ü Now' and 'Take Ü There' remain effortlessly timeless - and even the deeper cuts of the album work exceptionally well to create an immersive and fun album.
With only one singular album, Jack Ü managed to be one of the most iconic electronic side projects of all time, and this album had a massive hold on so many people when it came out, landing the duo Grammy award wins with just their first and only album - but it makes all the sense in the world considering the people behind the project.
This particular form of trap music is some of the only music in the genre that can manage to keep me, and the feature list of this album mixes together a diverse set of artists to make hits alongside songs that big fans of both Diplo and Skrillex can appreciate. It's a great mix of both radio-friendly EDM and gritty, bass heavy songs that combine both the rough edge of Skrillex's early work and Diplo's hitmaking capabilities into one star-studded project.
There is an exceptional mix of genres and subgenres on this album that lead it to be a deeply enjoyable listen with songs that anyone can enjoy, and even the more "dated" or "weak" songs on the album are highly enjoyable, with the fun, never-ending energy of the album being something that is entirely infectious and impossible to ignore.
Not commonly will you find a project that defines an entire time period of a genre, but the only Jack Ü album managed to do just that. It shows the versatility of both Diplo and Skrillex while creating something sleek and innovative, and every choice on this album was something exceptional - from the vocal chopping of 'Where Are Ü Now' to the jungle-laced 'Jungle Bae', the duo managed to outdo themselves in every way imaginable.
The album manages to feel like every piece of EDM in one, and this is one massive nostalgia trip in such a fun and palatable format. It's a short and thoroughly enjoyable album on all sides, and both the radio-targets and the deeper tracks are something timeless; no matter how much of a 2015 landmark they feel like.
